Raising Awareness about the Benefits of Hospice & Palliative Care

HOSPICE BUFFALO CELEBRATES NOVEMBER AS NATIONAL HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH
(Buffalo, NY) – Throughout the month of November, Hospice Buffalo will join organizations across the nation to raise awareness about the benefits of hospice and palliative care, in recognition of National Hospice & Palliative Care Month. Hospice programs provide care, support, advocacy and education to people impacted by serious illness and loss. Patients receive individualized, comprehensive care from an interdisciplinary team of experts. Caring for the physical, emotional, spiritual, social well-being of each patient allows the team to address unique needs and challenges.
Since 1978, more than 90,000 patients in our community have experienced Hospice Buffalo’s commitment to providing the absolute best care possible, giving them the opportunity to spend their final months at home, surrounded by everything they love. For three consecutive years, Hospice Buffalo has been named a Hospice Honors Elite organization by HEALTHCAREfirst, recognizing agencies that continuously provide the highest level of quality care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Hospice develops a plan of care that is centered on the person’s goals. This care also provides emotional support, resources and guidance to help family members become confident caregivers.
“Hospice is not just for end-of-life – they can actually help when you want to improve someone’s quality of life,” said Linda H. daughter of former Hospice Buffalo patient. “I would tell anyone who has a loved one suffering with a serious illness to call Hospice Buffalo. They can be there for everything you need to help you and your family through a difficult journey. I wish I had called sooner, but I am very thankful for those four months we had together.”
"Too often we hear, ‘We wish we would have called sooner.’ Studies have shown that hospice and palliative care improve quality of life and can even prolong someone’s life when introduced early in an illness. It is essential for our community to understand that hospice is not giving up – it is not the abandonment of care or reserved for ‘final days’ – it is the most comprehensive care available and fully covered by Medicare,” said Dr. Christopher Kerr, CEO & CMO at The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care (Hospice Buffalo).
