“Grief and the Holidays” -- Community Support Programs

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY, Oct. 31, 2017 -- During the holidays we are accustomed to finding ourselves surrounded by the love and warmth of family and friends. We cherish the depth and beauty of these connections and attribute meaning to our shared traditions and rituals. We anticipate togetherness, celebration, comfort, laughter and joy. But for those who are grieving or have a seriously ill loved one, the holidays can magnify the feelings of loss and elicit sadness, distress, anxiety, uncertainty and fear. It may seem impossible to maneuver through festivities, knowing that the holidays will not be as they once were.

The Wilson Support Center is offering Grief and the Holidays programs as a resource to assist you during this time. The programs provide opportunities to remember and honor your loved one at the holidays, and guidance to help you cope with your grief. In the meantime, be gentle with yourself. Give yourself permission, space and time to decide what is best for you and your family unit. Advocate for your needs and accept help. Consider options to both maintain the old and create new tradition. Remember that there is no manual -- no right or wrong, nor any template from which you should mold your grief or your holiday.
