Everyone Loves a Birthday Party!
Everyone should be given the opportunity to celebrate their birthday with their loved ones, and we are looking for volunteers to make this happen for our patients. Hospice has received a generous donation earmarked for this wonderful cause. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to become part of the Hospice Birthday Brigade beginning in January 2012! Volunteers must be willing and able to pick up the patient's birthday cake at the Hospice Mitchell Campus, go to the store to buy (with funds provided by Hospice) balloons and a present, and then deliver it to the patient's home. Please keep in mind that Hospice serves all of Erie County, so we are looking for volunteers near and far! Call Lisa at 989-2360 for more information.
Be a Homecare Volunteer!
Did you start off volunteering in special events or administrative services and are looking for more patient contact? Become a homecare volunteer! Volunteers are needed to provide respite, companionship and peace of mind for patients and their caregivers. Call Sue at 989-2063 for more information. You'll be glad you did!
Hairdresser Volunteers Needed!
You know how good a trip to the salon makes you feel. Our patients miss that feeling. If you hold a current cosmetology license and want to bring a smile to a homebound patient, we have the opportunity for you. Call Marsha at 989-2018 for more information.
West Herr Comfort Cafe ~ Weekend Help
Food is a universal comfort. Our Hospice Café serves families, visitors and staff at the Mitchell Campus. Current open shifts are Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30-10:30am; 10:30am-1:30pm; and 1:30-4:30pm. Call Lisa at 989-2360 to sign up. A great way to get your school service hours!
Volunteer with Patients
The 22-bed Mitchell Campus Hospice Inpatient Unit, the 10-bed Mitchell Campus Hospice House, and the 8-bed St. John Baptist Hospice Buffalo House are the perfect answer. Volunteers are needed to provide companionship, engage residents in activities, and be a calming presence for an anxious patient and/or family. If this peaks your interest, call Marsha at 989-2018 for more information.
Need Service Learning or Community Service Hours?
If your teen needs service learning or community service hours for school, religion or a community organization, Hospice is the perfect place! A flexible schedule and multiple opportunities are available. Multigenerational volunteering is a great experience. Many of our youth volunteers stay on past their assigned hours stating their volunteer experience is very fulfilling. Call Lisa at 989-2025 for more information and an application.
Veterans Helping Veterans
The VA Healthcare System of WNY in conjunction with Hospice Buffalo announces "The Quality of Life Volunteer Program." This program involves veterans helping veterans through a critical time. A Quality of Life Volunteer is an integral part of a team who can assist in providing the best end-of-life care, help by visiting patients (in their homes, hospitals, nursing homes, or assisted living centers), helping at mealtime, engaging in activities or taking patients for a walk. Quality of Life Volunteers are volunteers who listen as veterans tell their story, lend an understanding ear, and assist with events for patients and families.
All Quality of Life Volunteers will attend special training sessions conducted by VA and Hospice professionals, learn about services in our area, and develop a sense of camaraderie with fellow veterans.
If you are a veteran or are interested in learning more or becoming a Quality of Life Volunteer, please contact Lisa Heintz, Volunteer Coordinator, at lheintz@palliativecare.org or 989-2025.
Telephone Survey Volunteers
Are you comfortable speaking to others on the telephone? We are seeking volunteers that would be responsible for calling patients and their caregivers regarding their satisfaction of Hospice care. The surveys are seven questions each to either the patient or caregiver, and a scripted outline for the volunteers will be provided along with any follow-up needed. In addition to phone surveyors, we are also seeking individuals comfortable using the computer to input the information gathered from the surveys into Survey Monkey (an online survey tabulation program). Guidelines for survey monkey inputting will also be provided. If you are interested, please contact Mary Walls, Volunteer Coordinator, at mwalls@palliativecare.org or 989-2365.
Interpreters Needed
Are you fluent in another language? Do you know sign language? If so, we could use your assistance! We are looking for volunteers that would be willing to accompany a clinician to a patient's residence or one of our facilities to assist with interpreting for them on an as-needed basis. If you are interested, please contact Sue Eckel, Volunteer Coordinator, at seckel@palliativecare.org or 989-2063.
