Comfort & Care When It's Needed Most

The first of its kind in Western New York, the Hospice Buffalo House at the Mitchell Campus is a place of comfort, and compassionate and professional care for patients in their final months or weeks of illness. The ten-bed House provides a serene home-like environment for Hospice patients who are unable to remain at home. Hospice Buffalo House is here to help.

The 10,000 square foot Hospice House features unique amenities specific to the needs of hospice patients. The design includes private rooms with cathedral ceilings, a large kitchen with dining area where family members may cook special meals and dine together, two spacious family lounges including a library and children's activities, a large living room complete with French doors which lead to a patio, and a beautiful walkway surrounding wooded grounds. In addition, the Hospice House has one visitor room for overnight stays, a laundry area, and a chapel.

Who provides care at the Hospice House?

Hospice care focuses on the comfort and relief of symptoms to enhance the quality of life for the resident and family. Registered nurses and nurses aides provide round-the-clock care to Hospice House residents. A hospice physician oversees each resident's medical care. The Hospice Home Care team comprised of a registered nurse, medical social worker, pastoral care chaplain, trained volunteers, bereavement counselors and consultant therapists is also available on-call to assist specific resident needs at the Hospice House.

What are the admission requirements to the Hospice House?

Any Hospice eligible patient that is in need of 24-hour nursing care during the final months or weeks of life is eligible for admission.

Hospice House admission is appropriate when:

  • A patient lives alone and is no longer able to feed or dress themselves
  • A patient's caregiver is physically or economically unable to provide care at home
  • Patient lives in unstable or unsafe home
  • Patient does not have adequate family support
  • Patient must relocate from areas outside of Erie County to be closer to family members

The patient and family, along with the patient's physician and Hospice Buffalo's medical director and staff, work together to determine if Hospice House is appropriate for the individual. Hospice House accepts patients regardless of race, color, disability, sex, or creed.
